FROM SWORDS TO MEN
INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my Touken Ranbu cosplay gallery, and welcome to Japan. Where giant lizards roam, colossal robots are the future, and swords are turned into men.

Touken Ranbu (刀剣乱舞) is a game that is based on historical katanas, and personifying them into real… or rather 2D people. This is not a new concept, but nonetheless interesting to a sword-and-samurai nut as myself.

CHARACTER SYNOPSIS
For ye who hath not played the game

I am Sayo Samonji. I was named after the poem by Saigyou Houshi. But the matters of my origin are not such a pretty sight. I am covered in blood and hatred, a revenge tragedy.

I am Kousetsu Samonji. Itabeoka Kousetsusai was my owner, and that is why I am named as such. Swords are better left unused. Before being drawn, strive to achieve peace so you will not be wielded. Is that not important?

Because my forging was assisted by a fox, I was named Kogitsunemaru. As an offering of gratitude to the Gods, I was bestowed with the names of both Kokaji and the little fox that assisted him. My body isn’t small in the least.

I’m Tsurumaru Kuninaga. Made in the Heian era, I’ve been passed from owner to owner up until now. Well, that shows just how renowned I am. Though, I can’t approve of grave-robbing or stealing from shrines out of desire for me.

I am Yamatonokami Yasusada. I’m one of Okita Souji’s favorite swords. I’d say I’m difficult to handle but I’m quite capable. Hope we get along.

I am Kashuu Kiyomitsu. The child beneath the river, the child of the river banks, I suppose. I may be hard to handle but my ability is top notch. I am always looking for people who can use me well, shower me with affection, and dress me beautifully.

THE SETUP
How it’s done – Samonji shoot

There is nothing too over the moon with the lighting setup in this one. A simple 2 light setup, and that’s it. The rest is just a lot of dry bamboo grass gathering and throwing.

A quick shout out to Luminos Studios Singapore, where the shoot was taken.

Fear the Sakura Branch Wolverine claws. Heh, studio shoots are fun. We messed around with quite a few concepts for this shoot… and I am literally hooked to Google’s Nik Collection for getting those old photo feels now!

THE SETUP
How it’s done – Yamatonokami & Kashuu

An outdoor shoot with thankfully good setting sun. We just used the sun as a back light, and filled in the front with a pair of strobe. Usual petal throwing applies.
